Dr. George J. Gellos

Dr. George J. Gellos of Bloomsburg and Allentown passed away at Phoebe Home, Allentown on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015 at the age of 87. Born in Bethlehem on July 10, 1928, he was a son of the late John G. and Helen (Phillipopoulos) Gellos. When the family moved to Allentown in 1934, George attended grade school, middle school and Allentown High School, from where he graduated in 1946. He then attended Muhlenberg College, majoring in Science and graduated with a B.S. Degree in 1951. From there he went on to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and graduated with a Master's Degree in Biology. After that he served four years in the U.S. Army while stationed in Texas.

After that he went to Penn State University where he received his Ph.D. Degree, majoring in Botany. Subsequently he was offered a professorship at Bloomsburg University, and he went on to teach Biology there for over 30 years of meritorious service, retiring in 1998.
George never married and lived continuously on his property in Bloomsburg which he loved dearly, and lived a rather private, quiet and secluded life, regularly returning back to Allentown to spend time with his mother and beloved brother, Spyro.
George was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Bethlehem, Pa. He was also an Army veteran and lifetime member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA.)
His brother wishes to express many thanks to the staff, employees and cats of the Phoebe Home for making George's last days pleasant, caring, comfortable and compassionate.

Survivors: brother, Atty. Spyro J. Gellos (ret.); grand-nephew Dr. Theodore G. Phillips and his wife Gail and their children George, Lena and Peter.

Services: viewing Monday, Nov. 23 beginning at 10:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1607 W. Union Blvd., Bethlehem, followed by funeral service at 11:30. Interment following at Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown.

Contributions: in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the George & Spyro Gellos Trust of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Arrangements are by Nicos C. Elias Funeral Home, Allentown.
