Michael J. DeRomo
Michael John DeRomo, age 74, of Coopersburg, PA passed away on June 16, 2017 at home surrounded by his family and friends after a two year battle with cancer. Born in Forty Fort, Luzerne County, PA on December 10, 1942, Michael was the son of the late John DeRomo and Esther (nee Dorio) DeRomo.
Michael graduated in 1960 from Osceola Mills-Philipsburg High School in Centre County PA, in 1964 from Indiana State College, Indiana, PA with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies and in 1968 from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN with a Master's Degree in Secondary School Counseling. Michael taught social studies for three years in Delaware, Ohio before taking a guidance counselor position in 1968 at Upper Perkiomen High School for 23 years. In subsequent years he owned and operated a Subway restaurant franchise and also owned and leased multiple rental properties. Michael regularly volunteered as an information greeter at LVHN Cedar Crest and was proud of recently receiving his ten-year volunteer pin.
Michael's interests were many and varied. He loved traveling and visited many countries and was a regular seasonal visitor in Florida and Cancun, Mexico. Michael enjoyed good food, loved to cook and entertain. He enjoyed nice cars, good wine, better cigars, and a great martini! His home and its woodland grounds were a joy; he loved nature, watching birds and animals, and cherished his cats.
Survivors: Michael is survived by his sister Vivian (DeRomo) Gavalek of Allentown, PA and niece Michelle Gavalek of Arlington, VA. Michael was predeceased by his parents and long-time partner Harold W. Harner. Michael leaves many good friends with whom he joyfully socialized over many years, a close group who were especially kind and helpful during his illness, and his beloved cat Bella, all of whom will miss his humor, kindness and presence in their lives.
Services: viewing Saturday, June 24 from 10 until 11 a.m. at Nicos C. Elias Funeral Home, 1227 W. Hamilton St., Allentown followed by funeral service at 11:00. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. Contributions: to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) or to a charity of your choice.
