Nyles R. Roberts
Nyles R. Roberts, 87, of Allentown, died May 22 in hospice, after a long struggle with Parkinsons disease. He was the husband of Barbara M. (Ziegler Trinkle) Roberts; they were married for 14 years. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of five children, Patricia Ann (Schaefer) Roberts; they were married for 24 years. Born and raised In Slatington, he was the son of tho late Richard and Ethel (Steckel) Roberts. Nyles graduated from Slatington High school in 1942 where he wes honored as best athlete in both basketball and baseball. An avid athlete, Nyles went onto compete in semi-pro basketball and baseball before an injury prevented further play. Mr. Roberts worked as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life for most of his career. After his five children were competitive swimmers, Nyles became a swimming coach for the Jewish Community Center and Cedar Beach summer program, resulting in many undefeated championship seasons. He retired from coaching in the 1980s.
Survivors: He leaves behind his wife Barbara; sons, David and his wife Robin of Allentown, Tim and his wife MaryEllen of Macungie, Rich and his wife Sharon of Merchantville, NJ; and daughters, Cathy and her husband Tony Bodisch of Coplay, and Diane Roberts-Tatum of Salisbury. His sister, Margaret (Peggy) Miller resides in Emmaus. Nyles has seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many nephews and nieces.
Services: Will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 25, Nicos C. Elias Funeral Home, 1227 W. Hamilton St., Allentown with Rev. Michael Tannous officiating. Calling hours are from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Committal will follow at Cedar Hill Memorial Park.
